Weighing In Motion Research – Testing Tracks In Araranguá / SC

Brazil has been one of the pioneers in using low-speed weighing machines since 1975, when the National Roads Department (DNER) began to include dynamic weighing equipment in fixed and movable Vehicle Weighing Stations (PPVs). In 2006, the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT), through the General Coordination of Road Operations (CGPERT), elaborated the National Strategic Weighing Plan (PDNEP) that converged efforts for studies regarding: the useful life of the pavement, operational cost and vehicle safety; vehicles size supervision; and to feed the statistical system of traffic data.

In this line, the agreements signed between the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) and the DNIT aim at developing innovative research in the area of moving weighing for freight vehicles, aiming to improve the process of control of overweight and, consequently, the preservation of the pavement structure.

Here we will show the evolution of the research developed by the Laboratory of Transport and Logistics (LabTrans / UFSC) in test tracks located in the BR-101 south, in the municipality of Araranguá / SC, close to km 418 and the Vehicle Weighing Station 16.08), of the DNIT.
